What kind of work should I create for my graphic design college portfolio?

What kinds of things should I make for my graphic design college portfolio? I was thinking I should do some photoshop images, and possibly some drawings and make some cards. Is there anything I should definitely create for my portfolio?
I would really like to impress them, if at all make them want to accept me. So what kinds of things would be good to include?

  1. yes, you should add your thumbnails…they like that sort of thing. They like to see you have some rough sketches and then the final product side by side. I’m a graphics designer and they told me I was the only one they interviewed who did that.

Also, you may want to include like color separations, and stuff on that line

  2. He’s right, potential clients or companies want to see that you can not only design on photoshop, but have a creative ability and can draw as well.

  3. I currently am getting a degree in Graphic Design as well, and I would put in thumbnails of drawings, some photoshopped images may do well, depending on what they are. Figure drawings do very well and just basic 2-D stuff helps a lot.I would put some things that are both representational and non-representational, B/W and color, A self portrait may be good as well. Logos are a big thing, and even having a new way to package an existing product may help.
