im in construction and would like to make and print up some basic flyers to hand out.

SO lay out something in Word or similar (not got word, get openoffice for free from http://www.openoffice.org ) and press PRINT
Use a basic word processor, like Word Pad, in PC.
You might want some clip-art, get a CD-ROM at Staples.
Nothing is free;-{ it will cost you the ink cartridge at least.
